CASPAR/DCC Representation Information Registry

The Registry Web GUI allows browsing of the CASPAR/DCC Representation Information Repository

Representation Information is the information that maps a Data Object into more meaningful concepts. An example is the ASCII definition that describes how a sequence of bits (i.e., a Data Object) is mapped into a symbol. In order to keep things manageable, Representation Information can be classified as distinct types, such as Structure, Semantics and Other. The latter among other things, can include Software and Standards, this normalisation allows one, for example, to describe two sets of information which are identical, but which are held in different structures (formats), by combining the same Semantic description with different Structure descriptions.
CASPAR OAIS

The Representation Information of digital assets needs additional Representation Information so it itself can be understood over the Long Term. CASPARs Representation Information Registry structures this information into a network of dependancies which acts as the set of Representation Information that fully describes the meaning and format of a Digital Data Object thus providing all the information needed to understand and use the digital asset.

The Registry is a CASPAR/DCC component which allows centralised and persistent storage and retrieval of OAIS Representation Information (RepInfo) (including Preservation Description Information (PDI)) in a centralised Registry/Repository. It also contains maintenance tools for user interaction with the Registry for:-
  • Manual RepInfo ingest
  • Creation and maintenance of the XML structures (RepInfoLabels) which connect related RepInfo in the Registry into an OAIS network (using the defined categories Semantic, Structure and Other)
  • Other RepInfo maintenance

Within CASPAR and the DCC the Registry component has the following responsibilities
  • Ingest RepInfo into Registry - with appropriate name, description and classification
  • Extract RepInfo from Registry reliably.
  • Search Registry for RepInfo matching appropriate (wildcarded) criteria (a combination of name, description or classification)
